Grand jury indicts 3 accused of assaulting Honolulu police officers

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – An Oahu grand jury indicted three people accused of assaulting Honolulu police officers in the past few months.
The first case happened on July 1 at the Waianae transit bus station. According to the Honolulu prosecutor’s office, the suspect, 37-year-old Alan K. Char, was threatening people with a pair of scissors.
A responding HPD officer ordered Char to stop, but Char did not comply and allegedly pulled out a tow hitch and scissors and struck the officer. He also tried to bite the officer, officials said.
Char was tased by another officer and detained. While Char was being walked to a squad car, Char allegedly kicked another officer in the groin.
Char was indicted on Oct. 18 for assault on a law enforcement officer in the first and second degree.
The second case happened on Oct. 15, when a HPD officer was assigned to locate a suspect, 42-year-old William Torno, who was accused of previously assaulting a security officer at Lululemon at Ala Moana Center.
The HPD officer was able to find Torno and tried to detain him, but Torno resisted and struck the officer in the forehead, prosecutors said.
Torno was indicted on Oct. 18 for first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and second-degree assault.
The most recent case happened on Oct. 16. Prosecutors said a HPD officer arrived at the scene of a trespass call at a home in Kaimuki when the suspect, 63-year-old Steven Kon, allegedly punched the officer in the face.
Neighbors who were on the property helped detain Kon until other officers arrived.
Kon was indicted Oct. 22 for first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer.
